Warrior of the Week: Javon Smith

How long have you been practicing at Flux Power Yoga? How did you know this was your place?

After some starts and stops with my yoga practice over the last 15 years, I was invited by a member to attend a class at Flux and felt immediately welcome and safe. I signed up for an unlimited monthly membership the very next day and have been attending regularly since November 2017.

How has your practice evolved and /or what benefits have you gotten in your practice and in your life?

Injuries and surgeries had limited my ability to participate in cycling and other sports which brought me joy, and yoga was recommended a good way to actively rehabilitate my tailbone and hip. In the beginning there were many poses that I just couldn’t do, but the instructors regularly remind us to look after our bodies and modify whenever needed. Two years later I am practicing a 2-3 times per week and feeling stronger all the time. Yoga at Flux has become a stabilizing part of my life; my health has evolved from a healing stage to now maintaining wellness.

 Favorite pose and why?

It’s been a long road to simply be comfortable sitting on my tailbone again, so I’m most pleased to be getting stronger in boat pose. It’s a big deal for me! Warrior positions never make me fail to feel strong and focused. Even poses that look simple offer ways to keep pushing yourself.

Any advice for new yogis?

As a new yogi, it really helps to remember that this is a practice — not a perfect. Do what you can. Show up and know that you will get stronger over time.
