Warrior of the Week: Lisa Humphrey

Tell us a little bit about Yourself?

I am originally from Bellingham, and after living in the Midwest and the East Coast for several years, returned 10 years ago to call Bellingham home. I teach violin and viola private lessons full time and work one on one with about 50 youths every week. I run my own business with my husband (who also practices at Flux) and have two young kids, ages 4 and 7.

How long have you been practicing at Flux Power Yoga? How did you know this was your place?

I have been practicing 4-5 times per week since March 2019. I have dabbled in yoga before at other studios, but struggled to commit to it regularly. I was starting to think I liked the “idea” of yoga, but not the practice….BUT Something was different about Flux, I found it when I was struggling with a lot of unknowns in my life. The people were so warm and genuine and the practice really helped me through the difficult time. The community is amazing!

How has your practice evolved and /or what benefits have you gotten in your practice and in your life?

I am so amazed by how far I’ve come with my practice. I used to struggle through most (all!) of the poses. I remember thinking that I might die of down dog. Sometimes I would collapse out of poses because I would hold them until my muscles gave out. I watched layer after layer strengthen and change. I used to watch other people and wonder how on earth they were able to do these poses. Then one by one I was able to do these things too. I saw some things grow and change right away, other things took months and months. I’ve been trying to get from crow to low plank since March and I just did it for the first time just last week! One by one the poses started to work. I can do crow, headstand, flip dog to wheel, I still have more to learn and I’m excited to master new skills. In my life, I have seen improvements in my energy, my attitude, my mental health, my parenting, and my self confidence. I recently participated in the 40 days program and showed myself that I can show up for myself. I often find myself working yogic tidbits of wisdom into my teaching, inspired by the themes of the week. I have inspired my husband to join Flux and I recently signed my seven year old for Flux Kids yoga at her school. In my life and in my work I give to everyone around me. Yoga every morning is a little (big!) gift to myself.

Favorite pose and why?

That would have to be half moon pose. I feel it really embodies both effort and ease. It isn’t easy to twist and open and balance all at once, but when I get into the pose, I do the work, and there’s a beautiful balance and weightlessness when everything is all aligned. I don’t always get there, but when I can make it work, it’s my favorite feeling, I feel like I’m floating.

Any advice for new yogis?

Keep coming until you can’t not come and do it often! It doesn’t have to look pretty, you don’t have to look like you know what you are doing. No one else cares what your poses look like either. Do it for yourself, you will never look back.
