Warrior of the Week: Jessica Heck

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am Jessica! I grew up in Montana and went to Western for school. After college I met Jason and we moved to Seattle and then San Fransisco before moving back to Bellingham in 2017. Along the way we adopted our dog Clementine and cat Beast Mode. I have spent my career working in nonprofits and currently am the Development Director at DVSAS. Last January our family grew when Alexander was born a month early on 1/12. He is the absolute joy of my life and I love being a mom more than I ever thought that I would. When I am not working, moming, or yogaing, I love to paint, read, run and cook.

How long have you been practicing at Flux Power Yoga? How did you know this was your place?

I first started practicing at Flux in Fall 2017. I spent 6 months enjoying the classes and then got pregnant and had to take a break. I started coming back to Flux this past fall and it has been life-changing. I originally came back because I was looking for a place to workout that fit into my schedule but I have gotten so much more out of it than that. I knew Flux was my place when I took a day off from yoga after 5 days in a row and I missed it so much. My body and soul. I could not wait to go back the next day.

How has your practice evolved and /or what benefits have you gotten in your practice and in your life?

Since coming back to Flux, I feel like the mental piece of yoga has really clicked for me. Teachers often talk about mindfulness and staying present in class, and I could never really get there. Often in class I my mind would be thinking about work or my to-do list. For a long time I have felt like being busy and having a busy mind was the only way to be. Since Alexander was born, I have been trying to be more mindful but it is not easy. But every time I come to Flux I get more tools for focusing on what is happening in front of me. I feel like I learn something new every time I come that I can apply both on and off my mat.

 Favorite pose and why?

Bound Extended Side Angle – I can’t really say why. This pose just feels good in my body. I love the juxtaposition of grounding down with my legs but opening my chest towards the ceiling. I feel like I could stay in this pose forever. Working towards bird of paradise next!

Any advice for new yogis?

Keep at it! It might not seem like you are making progress but every day you get on your mat, you are moving forward.
