Warrior of the Week: Heather Othmer

How long have you been practicing at Flux Power Yoga? How did you know this was your place?

I’ve been practicing at FLUX for 2 years.  I knew this studio was filled with “my people” within the first week of practicing in the studio.  The instructors have a very inclusive way of conducting classes and the comfort level is instantly really high because of the total acceptance of each of us in our personal practice.  I feel the studio is very extroverted (like me).  It’s filled with people I look forward to seeing each morning and although we are only connected through the studio I feel that I have made true friends at FLUX.

How has your practice evolved and /or what benefits have you gotten in your practice and in your life?

Well….  I am not a “natural” at yoga.  I am not very flexible.  I have always been an athlete, but it is with the big muscles and it is a very different experience.  Yoga has helped with the flexibility little by little each day.  The surprise for me with yoga and FLUX specifically is how spiritual my practice has become.  It is my church (so to speak)- on my mat I feel a certain sense of presence and peace that I don’t find in other places of my super busy life.  It’s also a place I cry.  No one notices because the tears mix with the sweat that runs off my body.  I cry for my Dad’s Alzheimer’s,  the Planet, our divided country, stressful real estate contracts, lost love, pets that have died.  Basically everything I bury makes its way to the surface in that 55 minute practice.

Favorite pose and why?

I like wheel.  I can get into that pose even when I think I can’t.  It is a perfect metaphor for all of the things in life that seem too difficult, until you try.

Any advice for new yogis?

Now is the time.  You won’t be disappointed with your progress on all levels of your being.  Just start.  The rest will fall into place.
